This is true. During my move from Maine, where I had lived for forty-seven years, to El Salto Mountain in northern New Mexico, love grounded me.

I have worked since I was eleven years old. Dare I love myself enough to give myself this year off as a gift? I remember “catching”the notion that love is forgiving, and I trust that applies to me loving myself.

OCTOBER 1991

For the past month I have been repeating the affirmation “Love guides my life.”Today I realized the affirmation has become as natural as breathing. People respond to the love I extend. I smile at strangers and feel love returned. This morning I surprised the UPS man with a hug. Daily, I experience love, express it, and remain present as it returns to me.

My teaching, too, is filled with love, ease, and humor. Explanations come spontaneously, without thinking. I challenge, provoke, share, and simply entertain with stories. Dare I believe that I can merely be present and loving?

“What about lesson plans?”my trickster cajoles.

Lesson plans leave no room for love and the unexpected.
